State Bar answers flood victims' legal concerns

June 22, 2008 By WRN Contributor

As flood waters begin to recede, the State Bar of Wisconsin offers a helping hand to flood victims.

If you've got legal concerns following Wisconsin devastating floods, State Bar President Tom Basting says attorneys statewide are standing by to help you with legal advice.

Basting says lawyers are volunteering to provide legal help to flood victims who call the State Bar's disaster legal services hotline.

“We've established a hotline where we will have people online hopefully to answer their questions or to steer them in the right direction if they have legal issues relating to the floods.”

For example, we've heard a lot about fake FEMA folks. Basting is urging people to call the informational hotline to prepare for FEMA officials — both legitimate and fraudulent. Other concerns relate to insurance claims, and how to go about doing it.

“We're not offering to represent these people, but we can offer advice to them generally to tell them what they should do to get those legal concerns answered.”

In addition to the general public, Basting says the State Bar is also concerned about the needs of its members whose law practices may have been affected by the water.
