Benson enters not guilty pleas

July 14, 2008 By WRN Contributor

A former orthopedic surgeon accused of being under the influence of painkillers and other medicines, at the time of a crash which killed a pregnant Oconomowoc school district official and her daughter, has pleaded not guilty to six felony charges. Mark Benson rear-ended the vehicle driven by assistant Oconomowoc High School principal Jennifer Bukosky, killing Bukosky, her 10-year-old daughter, and her unborn child. Three others in Bukosky's vehicle were injured in the April 25 crash, which occurred just two days after Benson's third drunk driving conviction. A Waukesha County judge gave him until May ninth to report to jail on that conviction. The crash has triggered a statewide debate over a proposed tightening of Wisconsin's drunk driving laws. Governor Jim Doyle wants to make a third OWI offense a felony, with immediate prison time upon sentencing. And some lawmakers want those offenders' vehicles confiscated.
