Doyle defends Fischer

July 17, 2008 By WRN Contributor

Governor Jim Doyle defends departing Commerce Secretary, Jack Fischer. Doyle expressed disappointment over Fischer's resignation, during a visit to Eau Claire on Thursday. "He brought a lot of great backgound and experience," said Doyle. "He's done a good job, he's worked hard to promote Wisconsin."

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel ran stories last week, detailing $20,000 spent on three international trips in less than three months, as well as criticism of Fischer by business leaders. Fischer announced his resgination from the post in a letter to Doyle on Wednesday. The governor said he doesn't know every item on Fischer's expense list, but that the job he did was valuable: "if anybody thinks we shouldn't be having a Secretary of Commerce out trying to sell Wisconsin aorund the world, they don't know what this this job is."
