Fond du Lac already has a smoking ordinance for its restaurants, but a new group wants a total ban that would include taverns, work and public places as well. The Smoke Free Air For Everyone or SAFE Initiative launched that effort Wednesday.
Initiative Coordinator Maggie McCullough says it's been done in Appleton, Madison and elsewhere. She considers a ban the next progression in recognizing there is "no safe level of second hand smoke."
Retired cardiologist Dr. John Lent, who still practices medicine in volunteer efforts, says studies bear out the harmful effects of second hand smoke include lung disease, heart attacks and sudden death.
McCullough says they'll draft a proposed ordinance for the City Council to consider.
