Sports tidbits with Bill Scott

August 21, 2008 By WRN Contributor

Bret Bielema Ryan Helminen birdied two of his last three holes yesterday (Wednesday) to win the Wisconsin State Open golf tournament at Eau Claire Golf and Country Club.  The Appleton native started the day with a 2-shot lead and finished with a 4-shot win, good for $8,100 in prize money.

There'll be no varsity football at Lomira High School this season.  About 15 upperclassmen, including one returning senior, was all the school could muster for the varsity, so instead of using undersized underclassmen, the Lions will play its junior varsity and freshman seasons.  Varsity football could possibly return for next season.

The Badgers unveiled their two-deep roster for the upcoming football season on Wednesday.  Wisconsin Coach Bret Bielema (pictured) is handing the starting quarterback job to Allan Evridge, as expected.  Junior Dustin Sheer is #2 followed by sophomore Scott Tolzein.  The Badgers open their season August 30th at home against Akron.

Former Wisconsin track & field All-American Matt Tegenkamp won his preliminary heat and posted the top qualifying time for Saturday's final in the men's Olympic 5,000 meters at Beijing National Stadium.  Tegenkamp is looking to become just the fourth American man to medal in the 5,000 meters.
