Janesville considers regional bus service

September 24, 2008 By WRN Contributor

The city of Janesville is applying for state funds to study expanded bus service to the cities of Milton and Whitewater.

Transit Manager Dave Mumma says original discussions only included Milton, but there is interest in reaching out to Whitewater. He says that's largely due to the addition of more manufacturing job there, which could tap into the Janesville labor market.

Mumma says the study will cost around $50,000. The grant would cover 80-percent of the cost and the cities of Milton, Whitewater, and the UW-Whitewater would fund the rest.

Mumma says they'll find out the status of the grant in November. If approved, they'll hire a consultant in the spring and will expect a report sometime by this summer. If there is a need, Mumma says the new service could be in operation by 2010.

WCLO's Steve Benton contributed this report.
