Judge rules against Beloit casino

October 7, 2008 By WRN Contributor

The effort to build an off-reservation casino in Beloit has hit another road block.

A federal judge has denied claims made by the St. Croix and Bad River Chippewa that an Interior Department rule doesn't apply to them.  That rule sets a minimum distance requirement between casinos and reservation land.

If the rule is applied, tribal spokesman Joe Hunt says it would eliminate the Beloit Casino project because the reservation is too far away from the proposed site.

The tribes argued that the rule was passed after the Beloit project already had preliminary approval.

Hunt says the tribes have appealed the decision.

WCLO's Steve Benton contributed this report.
