Kagen: Keep Chrysler out of bailout

November 20, 2008 By WRN Contributor

Congressman Steve Kagen (D-Appleton) says Chrysler doesn't need government money. It's owned by a private equity firm, Cerebus, who also owns New Page Corporation. New Page recently shut down two paper mills in Kagen's district, one in Kimberly and another in Niagara. He says Cerebus can generate millions of dollars toward Chrysler, by selling off the mills or reopening them. The Democrat says there are buyers waiting to purchase the facilities.

Regarding two of the three auto makers wanting federal money, General Motors and Ford, he's "willing to consider" supporting them for a bailout.

The Appleton Democrat says the auto industry crisis reflects a greater problem of American industries being threatened by overseas manufacturing.
