A toddler was killed when he wandered on to the highway in Clark County Monday.
According to a press release from the Clark County Sheriff's Department, 20-month old Alvin Martin was walking in the southbound lane of State Highway 73 when a vehicle driven by a 32-year-old Owen Man struck him. The child was pronounced dead at the scene.
The accident happened at 5:30 p.m. in Christie, which is a small community located between Neillsville and Greenwood.
Clark County Sheriff Louis Rosandich says authorities have ruled out speed and alcohol as factors. The driver reportedly stopped as soon as he realized he's hit something, and called authorities after discovering it was a child.
While authorities don't plan to seek charges against the driver, Rosandich says they are still investigating whether the family was negligent in their care. He says any possible charges would be handled by the District Attorney.
Rosandich says they are still trying to determine if the family was looking for the boy and why he wasn't being watched.
