UW-Whitewater Police say they've arrested a student on charges of carrying a concealed weapon in a state building.
Campus Police Chief Matt Kiederlen says a tip from the public led to the arrest of 39-year-old Stephen Schuerr on Tuesday morning. He was arrested in Upham Hall, while attending a class in the building. Schuerr was searched by police and the weapon was found without incident.
It's not believed Schuerr intended to harm anyone, but was carrying the handgun for his own personal protection. Kiederlen says it's a poor decision, likely brought on by high profile acts of violence on college campuses.
Schuerr faces charges of carrying a concealed weapon and possessing a firearm in a state building.
