Brewers sign Coffey, avoid arbitration

December 9, 2008 By WRN Contributor

The Milwaukee Brewers signed relief pitcher Todd Coffey to a 1-year contract worth a reported $800,000, avoiding salary arbitration.  Coffey can earn an extra $200,000 with appearance incentives.

The Brewers are also expected to sign free agent 3rd baseman Mike Lamb, who they picked up late last season.

***  At baseball's winter meetings, Los Angeles Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said he ran into free agent pitcher CC Sabathia on Sunday night and Sabathia told Colletti he wanted to be a Dodger.

Meanwhile, Brewers general manager Doug Melvin told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that he met with Sabathia's agents on the first day of the winter meetings and declared that the Brewers are still in the running to sign Sabathia.  Melvin said the two sides have agreed to talk again later this week.
