Seperate trials for prayer pair

December 23, 2008 By WRN Contributor

A Marathon County judge has set separate trial dates for the parents charged in the death of a Weston girl.

Dale and Leilani Neumann will be tried separately on reckless homicide charges in the Easter Sunday death of their 11-year-old daughter Madeline Kara . Leilani's trial will begin May 14th, Dale's on July 23rd. Both are expected to last a week.

The dates were the earliest available even though the couple had demanded a speedy trial within 90 days.

Prosecutors say the parents had a legal duty to seek medical care for their daughter as she died from undiagnosed diabetes. But the parents will argue that prayer is a legal form of treatment.

If convicted, both face up to 25 years in prison.
