Jim Doyle and other governors have a figure in mind, for a federal stimulus package to states: $1 trillion. Doyle joined four other Democratic governors (Ted Strickland of Ohio, Jon Corzine of New Jersey, David Paterson of New York and Deval Patrick of Massachusetts) Friday, in calling for the federal economic stimulus package. Doyle says that includes $250 million for education, which Doyle said accounts for the biggest share of state budgets.
The proposal also includes $350 billion for road and infrastructure, $250 billion for Medicaid, unemployment insurance, and other programs, and $150 billion for tax breaks.
The governors say their proposal has not been formally pitched to Congress and the incoming Obama administration, but Doyle says they've been “willing to listen very carefully.”
