Marinette Co. crash victims identified

January 20, 2009 By WRN Contributor

The Marinette County Sheriff's Department has released the identities of everyone involved in Sunday night's fatal vehicle crash on U.S. 41 between Marinette and Peshtigo.

The victims of the crash are identified as 44 year-old Joel Rivas of Wrightstown and his four children, 19 year-old Nancy, 16 year-old Elina, 15 year-old Karen and 12 year-old Nicandro. All five perished when the car they were in was struck by a pickup truck at the intersection of northbound 41 and Country Meadow Road. The driver of the pickup truck, identified as 39 year-old Richard Allen Powell of Marinette, was arrested for suspicion of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and homicide by operating while intoxicated.

Powell has since been released from the Marinette County Jail, as investigators wait for the official results of his blood-alcohol test. The Marinette County Sheriff's Department is unsure if drunk driving, road conditions or vehicle speed were causes of the accident, and the crash remains under investigation.
