Shooting deaths leave department shaken

January 12, 2009 By WRN Contributor

A murder-suicide in Fond du Lac County leaves many with questions about what went wrong, after a 48 year-old man chased his wife outside their home Friday morning, and shot her and then himself on the front walkway. It all occurred with deputies already on the scene but unable to prevent the tragedy.

Fond du Lac County Sheriff Mick Fink says a deputy tried to urge Kurt Hinkley to put down his handgun, but there wasn't enough time. Hinkley shot his 42 year-old wife Julie, and then turned the handgun on himself. The couple's three-year-old daughter, who was at home at the time of the shooting, was not hurt. Fink says Kurt Hinkley took some sort of measures to make sure she wasn't harmed. An older child was in school at the time of the incident, which Fink says has left his department shaken.

Deputies had responded to the residence, in the Town of Eldorado, for a previous domestic incident last November.
