Tax credits for teachers

January 21, 2009 By WRN Contributor

Teachers who spend their own money on classroom supplies could get a state tax break.

Wisconsin teachers would be able to claim a state tax deduction for money they spend on classroom supplies, under legislation from state Representative Roger Roth (R-Grand Chute). The deduction would amount to about $250.

Roth says the deduction would match one that already exists on the federal level, but is not present in the state tax code.

The Grand Chute Republican says many teachers already spend well above $250 a year of their own money, so the state should be doing what it can to help and encourage them to keep doing what they can for the benefit of students.

Roth says the change would also help to get rid of any confusion between federal and state tax codes.
