Battling over tax hikes

February 17, 2009 By WRN Contributor

Republicans are warning of tax hikes in the budget bill Governor Doyle submits to the Legislature tonight.

While the Governor has said his budget will not include general increases in sales or income taxes, corporate taxes would see a boost. State Senate Minority Leader Scott Fitzgerald says there will be strong GOP opposition. Also, Fitzgerald says they're wary of creating sales tax exemptions by repealing current exemptions.

Fitzgerald says they're ready to fight any proposed tax hikes "tooth and nail."

Wisconsin is facing a $5.7 billion budget deficit and Governor Doyle warns of deep cuts. But his job is being made easier with the state expecting $3.5 billion in federal stimulus money.
