Lobbying for a higher tax on smokers

February 17, 2009 By WRN Contributor

Tobacco foes are pulling for the governor to hike cigarette taxes in his budget address tonight.

The tax just went up a dollar a pack a year ago, but Governor Doyle had originally asked for a $1.25 increase. Maureen Busalacchi of Smoke-Free Wisconsin hopes he asks for another boost, possibly even higher than before. She says doing so helps to reduce adult and youth smoking.

There are indications at the Capitol that the governor will propose another increase in the cigarette tax, possibly as high as 75 cents a pack. He's also expected to include a statewide smoking ban that covers bars and restaurants in the budget bill.
