Lobbying for new levy limits

February 12, 2009 By WRN Contributor

A taxpayer watchdog group is sounding an alarm about possible increases to local levies.

Wisconsin Property Taxpayers, Incorporated spokesman Mike Birkley says limits expired at the end of the year, and there's a good chance communities could push for greater increases if the Legislature doesn't act soon.

Birkley says the new Democratic-controlled Legislature will face considerable pressure to expand the taxing authority of local governments. If those limits aren't kept in place, he says local governments will be able to "tax at will."

The group is urging legislators to reinstate the levy caps.
