There could be a delay in when the Governor delivers his budget to the Legislature.
Governor Jim Doyle is expected to unveil his budget proposal on February 10th, but that plan could change if Congress is close to passing a federal stimulus package. If a deal is close in Congress and President Obama is days away from signing the legislation, Doyle says it makes sense to delay the state budget. He says, that way, Wisconsin will know exactly how much financial help is on the way.
The bill could provide Wisconsin with over $2 billion in federal aid.
The House has already approved its version of the bill and the Senate will debate its plan later this week. Doyle says that may provide enough information to work with, if officials can estimate what kind of help could be on the way from Washington.
Doyle says he's playing it "day by day" and will consider asking the Speaker of the State Assembly for an extension if necessary.
