Stricker with another narrow miss

February 23, 2009 By WRN Contributor

Madison's Steve Stricker was again in position to win a PGA Tour event but couldn't hold a late lead and finished 1-shot behind Phil Mickelson at the Northern Trust Open.

Phil Mickelson blew a 4-stroke lead and Stricker went up by two shots with three holds to play.  But Mickelson closed with birdie-birdie-parr and Stricker went parr-bogey on the final two holes to allow Mickelson to retake the lead and the title.  Mickelson became only the fourth player to win in consecutive years at Riviera.

It's the second time on the West Coast that Stricker had a chance to win and didn't.  He previously led at the Bob Hope Classic before collapsing on the final day.
