Arrowhead captures State Boys Hockey Championship

March 7, 2009 By WRN Contributor

Brian Berger The Arrowhead Warhawks won the 2008-09 WIAA High School Hockey Championship with a 5-1 win over Fond du Lac at the Alliant Energy Center.

Arrowhead jumped out to a 4-0 lead with all four goals coming from Warhawk Brian Berger (pictured).  Two of Berger's four goals came on the power play.  Berger didn't set the single game goal scoring mark, but he did set the tournament scoring mark with 8 goals in three games.  That breaks the old mark of 7 set by Pat Grzadzielewski of Mosinee back in 1972.

Fond du Lac didn't score until Joe Bertram put one past Arrowhead goaltender Nick Kohn late in the second period.  But Arrowhead's Connor McBride answered less than a minute later to end the scoring at 5-1.  Brian Berger finished with 4-goals and an assist.

Nick Kohn stopped 22 of 23 shots in goal for the win, as Arrowhead finished the season 21-5, winning their first state championship in their 2nd try.

Fond du Lac was making its 12th appearance in the tournament.  They captured championship back in 2007 and settle for a runner-up finish this year.  The Cardinals wrapped up the season with a 20-4-2 mark.
