Marquette's 2nd half comeback falls short

March 12, 2009 By WRN Contributor

The Marquette Golden Eagles will spend the rest of the weekend waiting for the NCAA Selection show, wondering where they'll be seeded, who they'll play and where.

The Golden Eagles almost came up with the biggest comeback in Big East Tournament history.  Down 16 at the half, the Golden Eagles outscored Villanova 44-29 in the second half, falling 76-75 in the Big East Quarterfinals.  Marquette actually took a 1-point lead in the final minute, but Dwayne Anderson's layup at the final buzzer won it for the Wildcats.

Jimmy Butler scored 19 points to lead five Golden Eagles players in double figures.  Jerel McNeal added 15, Lazar Hayward 13, Maurice Acker 12 and Wes Matthews 11, but the Golden Eagles shot just 33% from the field for the game.  Marquette is 24-9 with the loss.

Scottie Reynolds scored 21 and Corey Stokes 20 for Villanova (26-6).  The Wildcats advance to the Big East semifinals and will face Louisville on Friday night.
