Advocacy groups push for Obama budget

April 2, 2009 By WRN Contributor

A coalition of Wisconsin advocacy groups is putting its support behind President Obama's proposed federal budget.

Members of the Rebuild and Renew Now Coalition say Obama's $3.6 trillion budget will help revitalize the US economy. Robert Kraig with Citizen Action of Wisconsin says the plan has huge implications for the state as well, in terms of the economic recovery we need now and how it will be shaped in the future.

WISPIRG's Bruce Speight says the plan provides tax relief for working families, and closes corporate tax loopholes. He says the plan puts the interest of regular Americans ahead of corporate special interests.

AFSCME Council 40 President Michael Murphy says the plan helps businesses create jobs and supports the unemployed. The budget would increase programs that help those who are out of work, something Murphy says is badly needed with unemployment rates continuing to climb.

Wisconsin Environment Dan Kohler says the Obama budget invests in clean energy and helps to reduce global warming. He says it also cuts subsidies to oil companies, which will help to better fund exploration of renewable energy technologies.

The Coalition includes several environmental, labor, and public policy organizations.
