Bag-banners at it again

April 2, 2009 By WRN Contributor

Lawmakers at the Capitol could soon be considering a ban on plastic bags in grocery stores and other retail outlets.

State Representative Marlin Schneider (D-Wisconsin Rapids) has introduced legislation that would ban the further use of plastic bags. Schneider says they're a nuisance and a detriment to the environment. Schneider says the plastic bags are extremely toxic to aquatic life, they gobble up landfill space, and they're just plain ugly when they end up in the trees outside of homes.

Schneider admits many people like using plastic bags and some do have additional uses beyond just carrying purchases home from the store. However, he says it's time for a serious debate on getting rid of them.
