Phillips closes quarterback gap in Madison

April 20, 2009 By WRN Contributor

Curt Phillips The University of Wisconsin football coaching staff will wait until the fall to name a starting quarterback, but redshirt freshman Curt Phillips helped his cause during Saturday's spring game at Camp Randall Stadium.  Phillips engineered four touchdown drives on his six possessions, throwing for two scores and running for another.

Fifth year senior Dustin Sherer had a touchdown pass and a TD run in his three series, but he also threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown.

John Clay averaged better than five yards a carry on Saturday.  He finished with 62 yards.  Zach Brown ran for 110 yards and a touchdown and Erik Smith had 56 yards on three carries.

23,500 fans were on hand to see it on Saturday at Camp Randall.  Wisconsin's 2009 regular season kicks off September 5th at 6pm against Northern Illinois at Camp Randall Stadium.
