State capitol safe after evacuation

April 6, 2009 By WRN Contributor

The state capitol is open for business after having been evacuated Monday at around 5:15 pm.

Capitol police wouldn't immediately say why they chased people out of the building and away from the capitol square, just that it was an emergency. Governor Jim Doyle was in Chicago to support that city's 2016 Olympic bid. Wisconsin Radio Network's Jason Fischer was among those at the capitol who were whisked away by sirens and capitol police.

We later learned about a student pilot from Canada who allegedly stole a Cessna airplane and was being followed by two F-16 fighter jets as he flew over Wisconsin's capitol city. Officials say the incident is not believed to be a terrorist threat.
