Smoking ban advances

May 8, 2009 By WRN Contributor

A compromise on a statewide smoking ban was endorsed by two legislative panels on Friday.

Assembly Health Committee Chairman Jon Richards (D-Milwaukee) says, as with any compromise, there are winners and losers. The Milwaukee Democrat, for instance, is disappointed the statewide ban won't take effect until July 5th of 2010.

The delayed implementation was essential to get the Tavern League to drop its opposition.

The Assembly and Senate Health Committees approved the bill on Friday. The measure is expected to pass out of both chambers of the Legislature next week.
