Tavern League suspicious of next move

May 15, 2009 By WRN Contributor

Now that the smoking ban has passed, Dane County Tavern League President Barb Mercer says bar owners will just have to "grin and bear it." She's suspicious of what lawmakers are planning next.

"You know as we'll as I do. They don't stop. Once they get an inch they don't stop," says Mercer.

She claims the legislature has 30 bills pending in regards to licensing.

State Senate President Fred Risser says "We're not anti-tavern" and Mercer's fears are unfounded.

'I think the importance right now is the bill (smoke-free ban) and implementing the bill," says Risser.

The Madison Democrat says with 80% of Wisconsinites being non-smokers he believes bars will open themselves up to new customers.
