Taverns hope to avoid another legislative "hit"

June 9, 2009 By WRN Contributor

A proposal to ban drink specials in Wisconsin draws opposition from the Tavern League.

State Representative Josh Zepnick wants to put a stop to the specials, saying they lead to drunken driving and are a recipe for disaster.

Tavern League lobbyist Scott Stenger disagrees, saying it's not like their members are just giving away large amounts of beer. He says the Legislature has failed to demonstrate so far that there really is a problem. If there is one, Stenger says, the Tavern League is willing to address the issue.

However, he says the League objects to the Legislature telling bars how to operate their businesses.

Taverns are already coping with their loss on the smoking ban issue, and Stenger says they don't need another hit.
