Businesses remain vigilant

July 14, 2009 By WRN Contributor

Wisconsin business leaders say they won't let their guard down on possible changes in legal liability laws.

Brandon Scholz of the Wisconsin Grocers Association says that even though proposed changes to state liability laws were eventually deleted from the recently-signed state budget, the fight isn't over. He believes the measure could be easily revived at anytime.

The proposal, backed by trial lawyers, says that even if a business is only one-percent at fault in a liability lawsuit, it could be responsible for the entire amount of damages. Scholz says that's anti-business, and could make Wisconsin a "lawsuit haven" and also drive employers out of the state.

However, Scholz says if it does come back up, it would be easier to scrutinize outside of the budget.
