GOP warns of property tax "sticker shock"

July 16, 2009 By WRN Contributor

Republicans are warning of higher property taxes, resulting from the recently passed state budget.

State GOP Executive Director Mark Jefferson says it's bad timing for majority Democrats to increase taxes on homeowners, as people are losing jobs and companies are leaving Wisconsin.

The non-partisan legislative fiscal bureau estimates the budget will increase property taxes by $300 over the next two years on a home valued on $165,000. Democrats argue that's holding the line in some very tough budget times.
