An effort to recall Governor Doyle is being abandoned.
The group Wisconsinites Interests Now, or WIN, announced plans this spring to try and recall the governor a full year before his term in office was up.
However, WIN leaders are calling off the campaign, saying they could not reach a self-imposed goal of recruiting 10,000 volunteers to collect signatures before September First. Recalling Doyle would have required the group to collect 540,000 signatures in a 60-day time frame.
Rather than continue the effort, WIN leaders say they plan to focus on removing Doyle from office during the next general election, coming up in 2010.
