Harley to cut 1,000 jobs

July 16, 2009 By WRN Contributor

Milwaukee’s Harley-Davidson says it will cut another one-thousand jobs, after its profit for the last quarter plunged by 91-percent. The famous motorcycle company reports total earnings of almost 20-million-dollars from April-through-June, down from 223-million in the same quarter of 2008.

Revenues fell by 27-percent – and Harley’s factories said they would ship out fewer motorcycles than expected for the rest of the year. The total for 2009 will be from 212-thousand to 228-thousand machines – down from the 303-thousand bikes shipped last year.

As a result, Harley said it would have shut-downs and slow-downs at plants in Wauwatosa, Menomonee Falls, Kansas City, and York Pennsylvania. Seven hundred more production workers and 300 salaried employees will be cut, on top of up to 18-hundred layoffs that were previously announced for this year and next.
