Bill to expand college-level programs in high school

August 13, 2009 By WRN Contributor

Senator Herb Kohl wants to put high school students on the fast track to college. The Wisconsin Democrat announced new legislation Wednesday that will create up to $140 million dollars for programs that offer students college credit while still in high school.

"With it is a future for our young people," Kohl said. "Without it, there isn't much of a future."

College officials say the legislation will help them continue partnerships with local schools. NTC says 2,400 students are enrolled in 182 transcripted college courses this fall.

Kohl is hopeful the measure will be passed when Congress reauthorizes No Child Left Behind next year. He unveiled the plan at Northcentral Technical College in Wausau.
