Wisconsin State Fair … on a stick

August 7, 2009 By Jackie Johnson

You’ll find many attractions, exhibits, entertainment and food, but what’s the highlight at the Wisconsin State Fair? You probably already know the answer to that question.

“Hands down that would be chocolate covered bacon on a stick from the Machine Shed Restaurant. It’s new and it’s on a stick, so people are very intrigued.”

Patrice Harris, spokesperson with the Wisconsin State Fair, says there’s a lot of buzz about what she calls the perfect salty-sweet snack. The Machine Shed restaurant is prepared for a lot of fair-goers seeking to satisfy their curiosity, uncertainty, and anticipation of that odd combination of flavors. Harris says there are over 40 foods on a stick, and ten are new this year.

“We have everything from Cajun sausage on a stick, to cherry pie on a stick, deep-fried crabcakes, peanut butter and jelly, mini burgers, popcorn chicken or shrimp …”

Harris is looking forward to trying the chilled cookie dough on a stick, which is meant to be dipped into a vat of either chocolate or butterscotch. These novelty foods are just the beginning. Harris points out that there are over 200 venders at the fair. Cream puffs are always a favorite, selling nearly 400,000 of them last year.

NOTE: The fair goes on through August 16th.
