Governor skeptical of competing MPS plan

November 18, 2009 By Andrew Beckett

An alternate proposal for reforming Milwaukee Public Schools gets a cool reception from the governor.

A pair of Milwaukee-area lawmakers this week introduced legislation that would allow the school board to maintain control of MPS and gives the mayor only limited oversight. Governor Jim Doyle thinks it falls short of what’s needed to improve the school system by making it even more confusing about who is in charge and responsible for driving change in MPS.

Doyle favors a proposal that would allow the mayor to take control of the Milwaukee Public School system. The Governor says passage of the bill is a crucial part of Wisconsin’s application for federal “Race to the Top” education money, since the Obama Administration has made it clear that changes needs to be made in Milwaukee.
