Cubillan leads Marquette to first Big East win

January 7, 2010 By Bill Scott

Jimmy Butler made two free throws with 7.5 seconds left and the Marquette Golden Eagles knocked off 12th ranked Georgetown 62-59 at the Bradley Center.  It’s the first Big East win (1-2 Big East – 10-5 overall) for the Golden Eagles.

Golden Eagles coach Buzz Williams said he doesn’t want to be known as a three point shooting team, but he probably doesn’t mind this morning that senior guard David Cubillan was a perfect 6 for 6 from 3-point range to finish with a team high 18 points.

Lazar Hayward added 12 points and 11 rebounds as Marquette avoided its first 0-3 start in Big East play and its first 0-3 start to a conference season since 1998-’99.

Georgetown fell to 11-2 overall and 2-1 in Big East play.  Marquette next travels to Villanova on Saturday.
