Doyle demands action on Asian carp

January 20, 2010 By WRN Contributor

Governor Doyle and Michigan’s governor are calling on the White House to hold a summit on what to do about the threat of Asian carp entering the Great Lakes. They wrote a letter to President Obama after the U.S. Supreme Court refused to order the immediate closure of shipping locks near Chicago to stop the invasive fish from entering Lake Michigan.

Attorney General JB Van Hollen is “pleased” the Governor is demanding a meeting with Obama. Van Hollen said in a statement, “I will continue to pursue legal remedies to stop Asian carp species from entering Lake Michigan and protect Wisconsin’s interests.”

DNA from Asian carp has been detected in recent water samples taken from Lake Michigan, but federal officials say it’s not clear whether the fish themselves have entered the lake.
