MLK Day offers another reason to serve

January 18, 2010 By Jackie Johnson

As we commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., many folks in Wisconsin hope to volunteer their time and service in his honor. Gloria Nikolas, program development and training officer, with Serve Wisconsin, says you can look to your community organizers for ideas on helping others.

Following last week’s earthquake, the devastation in Haiti is on top of everyone’s mind. And Nikolas says there are many ways we can help Haitians, no matter how big or small — whether flying to that country or texting $10 on your phone. (HAITI to 90999.)

Nikolas says people should follow the lead of the slain political activist, as we observe the 81th anniversary of his birth. King was assassinated in 1968.

The U.S. holiday is observed on the third Monday of January each year; King’s birthday was January 15. Because MLKjr Day is a federal holiday, there is no mail. Banks, the stock market, libraries and schools are closed.
