January 7, 2010 By Bill Scott

10th ranked Michigan State beat the 17th ranked Wisconsin Badgers 54-47 in a slugfest in East Lansing.

Both teams struggled offensively.  The Spartans shot 38% (16 for 42) from the field while the Badgers shot just 33% (17 of 51) from the field and 27% (5 of 23) from three-point range.  The two teams combined to shoot just 28% from the field in the first half, with Michigan State leading 22-20 at the break.

Jon Leuer scored 18 of his 21 points in the second half and guard Jason Bohannon was the only other Wisconsin player to reach double figures with 10 points.

The loss ended the Badgers 6-game win streak and gave them their first Big Ten defeat this season.  Wisconsin has to rebound quickly.  They’ll return to Madison to host the 4th ranked Purdue Boilermakers on Saturday.
