Tackling cyber crimes through prevention

January 22, 2010 By Brian Moon

A Wisconsin police department is tackling cyber crimes by trying to prevent them. Madison Police Sgt June Groehler says the world of technology has changed compared to just a few years ago. “Today our children as young as a few years of age navigate a computer as naturally as exploring a playground,” says Groehler.

She says use of computers in modern society is double-edged-sword.

The department educates area youth groups on dangers in the modern media landscape such as sexual predation, sexting, cyberbullying and identity theft.

Madison police also offer free adult classes so parents can understand social networking sites and Craigslist. There is plenty of practical application in the courses, such as the Facebook class: where participants will actually create a profile, learn how to post pictures and be-friend someone.

Groehler says she has received requests from throughout Wisconsin for presentations. The department plans on completing a related DVD by summer which will be available to anyone in the US.

February classes are now being booked in Madison. Those interested in presentations or future DVD can call Groehler at 608-266-4590.
