Taxpayers pick up tab for prayer death couple’s lawyers

January 14, 2010 By WRN Contributor

Separate attorneys paid for by taxpayers will represent the Weston prayer death parents on appeal. A Marathon County judge has ruled that Dale and Leilani Neumann cannot afford to hire an attorney to represent them as they appeal their reckless homicide convictions.

The UW Law School has agreed to take one of the cases. Howard appointed them to represent Leilani meaning he’ll have to find an attorney for Dale. The question of who will pay Mr. Neumann’s legal expenses will be figured out after the couple’s home is re-appraised.

That figure will determine whether the state public defender or the county picks up the tab.
