Wisconsin schools that choose to teach human growth and development courses will have to include information about contraceptives, under legislation signed into law Wednesday by Governor Jim Doyle.
The Healthy Youth Act requires school districts to teach about birth control in sex ed courses, and to make sure information taught to students is medically accurate, comprehensive, and age appropriate. Doyle says the bill will help make sure students are learning everything they need to know to help avoid STDs and pregnancies.
The bill would stop districts from using abstinence-only models for sex education, which the Governor says have been proven ineffective. However, Doyle says that information can still be included in the courses.
