Marquette wins in OT; AGAIN!

February 25, 2010 By Bill Scott

The Marquette Men squeaked out another Big East road win Wednesday night.  Jimmy Butler’s baseline jumper as time expired gave the Golden Eagles a 63-61 overtime victory at St. John’s.  Butler had 18-points on the night.  Lazar Hayward led Marquette with 22.

The victory was the 10th-straight for Marquette over St. John’s; that streak dates back to 1967.  It was also the 12th time that the Golden Eagles were in a game decided by 5-points or less.  Marquette is 5-7 in those games.

The Golden Eagles (18-9, 9-6) can mathematically still finish anywhere from 3rd to 11th in the Big East this season.  They are currently in a three-way tie for 5th.  A top-four finish would earn them a two-game bye to the quarter finals of the Big East tournament starting March 9th at Madison Square Garden.  A finish of 5th through 8th earns them one day off.

Take a look of the Big East Tournament breakdown HERE.

Marquette will finish out the road porion of their Big East schedule Sunday at Seton Hall.  They close out the regular season with Louisville and Notre Dame at the Bradley Center next week.
