Millions overspent on school construction project

When Janesville voters approved a $70.8 million referendum in 2006 it was the largest school referendum in the state. The cost of the Janesville’s High School referendum construction went $3.6 million above the approved amounts. Now the school board wants answers.

Commissioner Tim Cullen says the board was told on more than one occasion the projects were on time and budget. Commissioner Bill Sodeman suggests the board can’t do much now.

The board is waiting for an explanation from district administration. School District CFO Keith Pennington wasn’t employed at the district when the referendum was approved in 2006 but is researching how the overspending occured.
