Speaker apologizes for misleading media

February 17, 2010 By Andrew Beckett

The Speaker of the state Assembly says he wants to move on from the questions surrounding his relationship with a lobbyist for the payday loan industry.

Following the passage of legislation that would regulate payday lenders, Assembly Speaker Mike Sheridan (D-Janesville) told reporters that he was sorry about not being clear with the media about his relationship with Shanna Wycoff. Sheridan says it wasn’t his intent, but he “understands that was the perception.”

Sheridan had denied rumors that he was dating Wycoff, but then admitted to the relationship a few days later. The Speaker says they are no longer dating, and insists the issue had no effect on the bill approved by the Assembly Tuesday night.

Sheridan says he’s human and has made mistakes, but he feels fellow Democrats were behind him and still support him as Speaker. He says the experience has been very painful for alot of different people, and it’s time to “close this chapter and move on.”
