Blast from the past takes on foreign policy of today

March 19, 2010 By Brian Moon

UW-Madison was among the politically charged campuses during the Vietnam era with teach-ins involving faculty occurring back then. This weekend an event tacking the tough foreign policy questions of today is being organized by Sociology Professor Joe Elder who attended UW teach-ins during the 60’s and 70’s.

Faculty panelists, campus and community groups will discuss issues surrounding Afghanistan and Pakistan. Uli Schamiloglu, Chair of the Central Asia Studies program, says the purpose is to provide information and generate dialogue.

Schamiloglu says other crucial points involve examining the role of the Taliban and how they affect governance, as well as the US diplomatic relationship between Afghanistan and Pakistan, and how the two Asian nations deal with each other.

The public is invited to participate in the teach-in which occurs Friday night and Saturday.
