More than a dozen people were injured as more than three dozen vehicles were involved in pileups on U.S. Highway 41 near Kaukauna Friday morning. Outagamie County sheriff Brad Gehring says dense fog is to blame for the accidents which occurred around 7:45. Gehring says the pileups happened at two separate locations and involved 31 and 7 vehicles respectively.
“You have to see it to believe it,” Gehring said. “The amount of compaction, if you will, with those 31 vehicles, you couldn’t fit a piece of paper between ’em.” Gehring said fourteen people were injured and two had to be extracted from vehicles at the scene of the larger crash. Appleton Medical Center officials reported one person in serious condition, but all of the others are in fair or good condition. Gehring said it’s a miracle no one was killed. “There’s actually one car almost completely on top of another car.” Drivers reported intermittent dense fog around the time of the crashes.
