Green Bay Women aim for Sweet 16

March 23, 2010 By Bill Scott

The UW Green Bay Women have never made it past the second round of the NCAA women’s hoops tournament.  Tonight, the 12th seeded Phoenix (28-4) draw 4th seeded Iowa State (24-7) with a trip to the Sweet 16 on the line.

Green Bay upset Virginia Sunday 69-67 for their first tournament victory since 2007.  With their 12th seed, the Phoenix are the lowest remaining seed in the field.

Since the tournament expanded to 48 teams back in 1989, only one 12th seeded team has advanced past the first two round.  In 1996, San Francisco accopmlished that feat.

Tonight’s tip-off from Ames, Iowa is expected to be around 8:40 cst.
